Recent successes
After a long polishing, the final architectural concept about the house of BME?s Solar Decathlon team is ready, in which they describe their objectives and the principles of house?s formation. The building 1:25 scale model with the other team?s models took part in an exhibition in Barcelona, where it received good feedbacks. An English-speaking video about the event can be found on the website of Solar Decathlon 2012.
Odooproject, presented itself for third time at the Electrocom International Electronics, Electrical and Communication Technology Trade Fair at the stand of Hungarian Electrotechnical Association in May 17-20.
Architectural concept
Our task is to design a residential house that can utilize solar energy as much as possible, be energy efficient on high levels. We need to demonstrate the operation of the latest sustainable technology through this house, which features are: for 2 people, 60m2 areas, free-standing family house. Our house is made for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 competition, which is hosted by Madrid. The competition will be held at the bank of River Manzanares for two weeks, expected in September 2012. Because of the large crowd, who visit the event, one of the fundamental aspects is the presentation of the house. The exhibited houses next to each other are like on a sport tournament presenting their own countries. In addition to the traditional residential function, during the competition, the operation is similar to a demonstration pavilion.
The planning area is 20×20 meters, horizontal area near the river bank. The main approach is an eastern path from the lot, in southern direction. The main façade of the house and the courtyard is basically open to this direction. The increased level, we can reach through variety of routes, with ramp or on steps. Our house is easily identifiable; its iconic look is able to become the symbol of sustainability, energy efficient design and solar sphere of thought. It is like a pavilion, transparent and with the open spaces it can truly satisfy the claim of presentation. Our plans interpret the house-court relationship, which comes from the traditional Hungarian folk architecture. Because of the climatic conditions a closed building was needed, so ?out? and ?in? was sharply separated from each other. Depending on the season they lived outside or inside, carried out the daily routines.
Instead of the today?s tempered residential houses we designed a closed courtyard, which we imagine as a sort of summer house. The integrated functional units in the external walls can be found in the interior as well. Our daily activities, besides the usual comfort, will be also done outside. The courtyard expands towards the main approach. It forms a smaller space that can be the place of outdoor recreation and work. The centrally located summer kitchen is the centre of outdoor-spent social life.
The house is able to adapt the diversity of Hungarian seasonal and daily weather conditions. The winter habitat retracts to the northern house, which is opened towards the yard in transitional period. Its use will become accentuated during summer. Thus we get a self-sustaining house that isn?t aloof, but keep a close contact with their surrounding environment. With the doubling of south facades, during winter we can utilize the sun?s energy on vertical surfaces in active and passive ways as well. The heat that is coming to the floor surface is guided and stored by the water network laid in the underlay. On the southern outer wall solar collectors do the same. During summer, because of the higher sun position, the energy is produced by the integrated solar panels on the roof. In addition, the mobile shading maximizes the time spent at the outer space. In the narrower section of the courtyard the horizontal shading is forming the space, with it focusing towards the interior space. At the side of the main arrival glass surfaces are protected with vertical shield. This separates the interior space, so the place of arrival opens to the outdoors. In our use of materials the principle of duality applies. The outer shell is consistent with the characteristic appearance of solar cells, standing in strong contrast with the uniformly treated white interior panelling. The building because of the transportation is pre-assembled, and will be built with lightweight technology, that we will have 10 days. To minimize on-site work and the acceleration of work processes are fundamental goals. The structure of the house is divided into five units. The paginal building blocks are aligned to road transportation.
Plans for the summer
After the exam period we continue the work at summer as well. We got an office in BME?s K Building that we are renovating right now and when it is ready we can start working together. About the team and the project there was made an English-speaking video, the latest news and events are available on the blog of Odooproject.
